Argentine football superstar Lionel Messi has been sensationally threatened by boxing champion Canelo Alvarez over an apparent act of disrespect towards Mexico’s national jersey.

Messi is widely considered the best footballer in the world, while Alvarez is arguably the best boxer on the planet, having won championships in four different weight divisions and is estimated to be worth in the vicinity of $280 million.

Now a spectacular feud has erupted between the sporting legends after vision surfaced of Argentina celebrating a 2-0 victory over Mexico at the FIFA World Cup on Sunday.

Canelo claims in the video Messi kicks, or stamps on, a Mexican team jersey, which must have been swapped to him by an opposition player.

Messi can be seen sitting on a bench and taking off his boots, with a Mexican jersey near his feet.

”Did you guys see Messi cleaning the floor with our jersey and flag,” Alvarez tweeted.

“He better pray to God that I don’t find him.

“Just like I respect Argentina, he has to respect Mexico! I’m not talking about the country as a whole, just about the bullshit that Messi did.”

Alvarez, 32, has won 58 of his 62 fights , and has only ever been bested in the ring twice.

Messi may be doing his best to avoid the Mexican pugilist given he’s in the middle of his last World Cup, and hoping to steer Argentina to glory in Qatar.
