Funds that took volatility in their stride and came up trumps in 2022

Fund managers faced a challenging year in 2022. As the stock market went on a rollercoaster ride, stocks in the mid- and small-cap spaces that haven’t run up in almost a decade were among the top gainers.

Funds that were able to capture the upsides in some of those stocks managed to outperform. With the market gaining strength from April 2020 till the end of last year, returns have been strong. But that also resulted in stock valuations turning expensive.

In a volatile year, when the benchmark Nifty returned 7.43%, fund managers had to pick and choose to generate alpha. Funds with exposure to PSU banks, auto and capital goods and having underweight positions in healthcare and IT were able to generate alpha and stay ahead of their peers.
