Furious manager Antonio Conte was red carded after VAR denied Tottenham a late winner in a chaotic finish to its Champions League clash with Sporting Lisbon.

The London home crowd went wild as England captain Harry Kane scored deep into stoppage time with the goal that would have secured progression to the round of 16 on Thursday (AEDT).

But after a long review, the Spurs striker was judged to be offside and the Group D leaders had to settle for a 1-1 draw as Conte raged.

"I was sent off because I'm the most popular man there," he quipped.

"I think the ball was in front of Kane and the goal is a goal. VAR is doing a lot of damage. I want to see if in another stadium of a big team if they are ready to disallow this type of goal. I'd like to know this.

"A lot of injustice. I don't like this type of situation. I see not positive things."

Rodrigo Bentancur had put Spurs level in the 81st minute after former Tottenham junior Marcus Edwards scored Sporting's opener in the 23rd.

It is now all to play for on the final match day, with just two points separating Tottenham and bottom-placed Marseille.

Spurs needs at least a draw in the final game to ensure qualification.

"I think you can see from the celebrations we thought we won it," Spurs right back Matt Doherty said.

"I don't really know what happened at the end. I thought because it went backwards and hit a defender it was a different phase of play.

"I'll have to look at the rule book. A few of us don't have a clue what happened."

There was also late drama at Estadio Metropolitano, where Atletico Madrid were eliminated with a 2-2 draw with Bayer Leverkusen.

Atletico's Yannick Carrasco missed a penalty that was awarded following a VAR check after referee Michael Oliver had already signalled the game was over.

Oliver blew his whistle after Leverkusen defended a corner but Atletico's players appealed furiously for a handball.

A video review showed the ball had been deflected into the arms of two Leverkusen players in the crowded penalty area.

A spot kick was given for handball against Piero Hincapie, but Leverkusen goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky saved Carrasco's effort before Atletico's Saul Niguez crashed a header against the crossbar on the rebound.

Reinildo tried to score at the third attempt but the ball hit one of his own teammates and deflected out of play.

Atletico players seemed to argue that Hradecky had left his line early and the penalty should be retaken, but those appeals were brushed aside.

A replay showed Hradecky's back foot was on the line when the ball was struck.

Meanwhile, Liverpool advanced to the knockout stage with three quickfire goals before and after halftime to beat Ajax 3-0.
