Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron claim gold four years after wardrobe malfunction

French ice dancing duo Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron have expressed their joy at winning the gold medal in the event, four years after a cruel wardrobe malfunction robbed them of the honour at the Winter Olympics.

Papadakis and Cizeron were pipped to the gold medal during the 2018 Pyeongchang Games after Cizeron accidentally unclipped the clasp on the back of Papadakis’ dress when performing a lift, forcing her to complete the remainder of the dance while attempting to hold the dress up.

However, there would be no such problems this time for the French stars, who posted a world record combined score of 226.98 on their two dances to take out the gold ahead of Russia’s Nikita Katsalapov and Victoria Sinitsina.

“We are super happy with our performance, we are in a totally different place from where we were four years ago,” Cizeron told Eurosport.

“Mentally and in terms of preparation too. We did not have a good memory of the short program there. We are super happy with our performance so indeed, it is a little revenge.”

“I think we don’t believe it yet,” 26-year-old Papadakis added. “Honestly it feels completely unreal.”

“For years this was the only medal that we wanted and the past four years were just about that moment.”
