Gardeners’ World star Adam Frost, 53, was shocked when, sitting in a psychiatrist’s office, he was diagnosed with “burnout and depression”. He’d had no idea – and meanwhile, his wife and one of his teenage daughters had also suffered a string of health horrors.
Adam caught Covid later than many Brits, and wasn’t hit with the potentially deadly bug until around September 2021.
It was just one on a long list of struggles that year, as his wife Sulina had fallen ill with sepsis and been rushed to hospital.
Then the couple’s teenage daughter, Amber-Lily, fell prey to an eating disorder at the tender age of 15.
While all of this unfolded, Adam had his teen son Oakley to care for too, although the other kids he shares with Sulina – Abbie-Jade, 25, and Jacob, 23 – are now all grown up.

“I got Covid and was locked in a room. [The whole family] got Covid,” Adam recalled in an interview with the Sunday Times.
“Then ten days later I was sat in front of a psychiatrist and a doctor and said, ‘You know, [you’ve] got burnout and depression’.
“[It] was a surprise as I only went into the room with Covid. The wheels came off a little bit,” he exclaimed.
However, like Monty Don and other gardeners before him, Adam quickly embraced the healing power of working in the garden and the benefits he felt it had on his mental health.
He has even contributed to a podcast series with a psychologist for Gardeners’ World, which debuted in January.
Adam recalled that he’d always seen the garden as a place of “solace” – somewhere he could use as an “escape” route.
However, the TV star made the difficult decision to sell up and walk away from his impressively large gardens at Villa Farm, a three-acre rural address near Stamford in Lincolnshire.
He had the impetus to make the move and downsize after the ill health of his family gave him a “stark reminder” of what was important in life.
Though he doesn’t have the same amount of land as before, he is growing spinach and potatoes at his more modest property – comprising of two stone cottages adjoined to make one home – and feels content.
“We decided it was better to simplify life, and now, I couldn’t be in a better place,” he confessed.
