Gary Neville destroys ‘pathetic’ Ousmane Dembele after France star subbed off vs Argentina | Football | Sport
France star Ousmane Dembele has been torn apart by Gary Neville following his display in the World Cup final against Argentina. The Barcelona winger was subbed off before half-time with the defending champions 2-0 down.
Dembele played a big role in Argentina’s opening goal. He was guilty of tripping Angel Di Maria in the penalty box, with Lionel Messi stepping up to score from 12 yards.
Dembele allowed Di Maria to beat him and Neville was not impressed with his showing. Didier Deschamps was clearly also not pleased with the 25-year-old, as he was one of two players dragged off on the 40-minute mark.
Neville said of Dembele’s role in the penalty decision: “Ah, it’s pathetic. Di Maria position, selection, well done to the manager, it’s a genius selection, it’s stretched that French team.
“[Alexis] Mac Allister has been in that pocket, they’ve not been able to cope with it, Messi has come to the right hand side. The penalty, I have to say, Dembele although he’s a wide player, what he does, this initial challenge… you know what Di Maria’s going to do; he’s been doing it for 10 years.
