Manchester United icon Gary Neville believes that a “curse” is the reason why Aaron Wan-Bissaka failed to open the scoring for the Red Devils against Everton on Saturday. The right-back had a golden chance to get on the scoresheet but fluffed his lines as his effort went wide of the mark.

Following a set-piece, the ball fell to Antony on the edge of the box who struck a shot but Jordan Pickford parried his effort back into the goalmouth where Wan-Bissaka latched onto it. With the goal at his mercy, Wan-Bissaka’s left-footed shot went wide of the post.

Wan-Bissaka had his head in his hands as he and his team-mates could not believe they had not taken the lead, though the defender has not been prolific since moving to United from Crystal Palace.

Neville, who also was not known for his goalscoring abilities during his time at Old Trafford, joked that the position is cursed as United right-backs have failed to find the back of the net with consistency. After the miss, Neville tweeted: “The right-back goal scoring curse at Old Trafford continues.”

Wan-Bissaka has scored just two goals since his move to United in 2019, both coming in the 2020/21 season, while Neville himself got on the scoresheet just seven times in over 600 appearances under Sir Alex Ferguson.

The right-back was just one of several United players to have good chances in the first half before Scott McTominay’s finish, as Marcus Rashford and Antony were among those who squandered efforts to take the lead.
