Global tablet shipments decreased by 8.8%, totalling 38.6 million units, in the third quarter of 2022 (3Q22) as compared to Q3 2021, a report has said. Chromebook shipments also declined by a whopping 34.4% compared to last year and only 4.3 million units were shipped by all the brands in this quarter, International Data Corporation (IDC) reports.
This was the fifth straight quarter of decline for the tablet market, IDC notes. The market research firm has attributed the decline to rising economic concerns. “After massive growth in 2020 and 2021, a decline in the tablet market was expected in 2022. The market is now experiencing not only a slowdown in demand, but also some strong macro-economic headwinds,” said Anuroopa Nataraj, senior research analyst with IDC’s Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers.
Tablet shipments: How brands performed
As per the IDC report, Apple leads the tablet market with a 37.5% share and has shipped 14.5 million units in Q3. Samsung has earned the second spot with an 18.4% market share and the South Korean giant shipped 7.1 million units during the quarter. Samsung’s tablet shipments declined by 4% on a year-over-year (YoY) basis. Amazon Kindle took third place in the tablet industry after shipping 4.3 million units in this quarter.

Apart from this, Lenovo saw a 36.6% decline in demand for tablets compared to last year’s quarter and took the fourth spot with 2.7 million units shipped. Lastly, Huawei took the fifth spot with 2.4 million unit shipments capturing a 6.2% market share.
The report also mentions that brands like Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, and Realme that recently ventured into the tablet market gave strong competition among affordable devices. However, the market is now experiencing a slowdown in demand, the report notes.
Chromebook shipments: How brands performed
The demand for Chromebooks in Q3 2022 was even lower than the tablets, says IDC. A total of 4.3 million Chromebook units were shipped worldwide as the brands faced a demand shortage of 34.4% as compared to last year’s quarter.

Acer took the top spot in Chromebook shipments with 1 million unit shipments and a 23.9% market share. Dell shipped 0.9 million units to take the second position while HP took the third spot after shipping 0.8 million units in Q3 2022.
Lenovo slipped to the fourth position and saw a 54.8% decline since last year’s quarter. Lenovo only shipped 0.7 million units of Chromebook in this quarter while Samsung ranked fifth with a 7.9% market share and 0.3 million unit shipments.
