GM to extend benefits to domestic partners and their kids

General Motors, in an effort to “meet the needs of an increasingly diverse pool of current and future talent,” is expanding its benefits eligibility to domestic partners of its U.S. salaried employees and their children, beginning next year.

GM offers benefits to domestic partners and their children in more than a dozen countries, and it’s working to expand that offering globally in 2023.

“As we look at family dynamics, we want to ensure that the benefits we extend to employees reflect today’s households and meets their needs. Employee feedback led us to extend domestic partner benefits,” the automaker said in a statement to Automotive News. “This is an important step toward our vision of greater inclusion as well as advancing equity within our work force and their families.”

GM’s Total Rewards provides medical insurance, dependent life insurance coverage, salaried retirement program survivor benefits, an employee assistance program and more.

The automaker said it believes in its ability to meet the needs of an increasingly diverse pool of current and future talent.

“We are committed to increasing the variety of highly skilled talent and recognize that there are many pathways to success. Leading talent comes from a variety of generations, experiences and circumstances, and we actively look for ways to widen opportunities for people from all backgrounds to engage with and consider a future with GM,” the company said. “Our ultimate goal is to be the workplace of choice for talent and to be a more inclusive, equitable and diverse company overall. Domestic partner benefits are an important step toward that vision for our company and GM’s work force.”
