Gmail gets a new look: Here’s what’s changed

Earlier this month, Google announced that it will bring a new integrated view for Gmail on the web. Weeks later, the new design is now rolling out to the end-users. “Rollout to Rapid Release domains and users with personal Google Accounts has begun,” Google said in a blog post. The rollout for Scheduled Release domains will begin on February 28, the company added.
Gmail’s new integrated view: What’s changing
Google says that the new view will make it easy to move between critical applications like Gmail, Chat and Meet at one unified location. Users will be able to switch between apps through the main menu that will appear on the left of the screen. The main menu will have pill-shaped icons for Mail, Chat, Spaces, and Meet.
When working in Chat and Spaces, users will be able to view a full list of conversations and Spaces within a single screen, making it easier to navigate to and engage. When in the inbox, users will be able to view the full array of Mail and Label options that are currently available in Gmail.

Hovering over the apps will open a floating preview related to each service (except Meet) for the folder/label or contact list if the collapsible panel (controlled by the hamburger button in the top-left corner) is hidden.
Gmail’s new design also brings notification bubbles that make it easy to stay on top of what immediately needs the user’s attention.
How to enable the new design
Google, in its blog post, has explained that users can enable it when it is rolled out to their account. It must be noted that Gmail’s new integrated view is not yet widely available. In case you have received it, here’s how you can enable it

  • Click Settings at the top right
  • Search for Quick Settings and then click on Try out the new Gmail view.
  • This will open a new window. Click Reload.
