Google has announced a new feature drop for the YouTube app on iPhone and iPad. As a part of the feature drop, Google has added iOS SharePlay support for YouTube Premium users. Also, Google recently added a similar feature for YouTube on Google Meet video calls.
As per the official announcement, the iOS SharePlay support for YouTube will roll out to all users in the coming weeks and it will be available only for YouTube Premium users.
For those unaware, Apple announced the SharePlay feature on iOS in 2021 to make it easier for users to share media and watch them together through FaceTime. Several other video streaming platforms like Disney+, HBO Max, Hulu, etc already added support for iOS SharePlay a while back. Google is finally adding it to YouTube as well.
Engadget has reported that it is possible that only one person on the video call will require a YouTube Premium subscription and others won’t be able to watch the content. Basically, one who wants to share something from YouTube on a FaceTime video call will require to have a YouTube Premium subscription.
YouTube feature drop: Other features
Apart from the iOS SharePlay support for YouTube Premium, Google has also added a video queuing feature for mobile devices. Premium users can now add videos in the queue they want to watch next. The feature has existed on the web version of YouTube since 2019.
In addition, YouTube is also adding 1080p enhanced streaming for YouTube Premium subscribers on iOS. The feature is expected to enhance the video experience for users.
Apart from these, Premium users will also get the option to pick up from where they’ve left on other devices. Along with this, the Auto download feature will now show recommendations for videos.
