Google brings Matter support to Nest devices, Android: Here’s what it means

Matter, the latest smart home standard that aims to allow customers to choose their preferred Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled product from any company and make different devices work together, is now rolling out on Google‘s products. The company announced that it is bringing the new standard today (December 15).
What Google devices are getting Matter support?
“Setting up and customising your smart home devices with Google Home just got easier thanks to Matter, a new standard for smart home platforms, apps and devices. Starting today, Google Nest devices and Android devices are Matter-enabled, allowing you to quickly and consistently set up Matter-enabled devices and customise your smart home to best suit your needs,” the company said in a blogpost.

This means that if you own all or some of Nest products, including the original Google Home speaker, Google Home Mini and Google Nest Mini, the Nest Audio, all three Nest Hub devices (first gen, second gen, and Max) and Nest Wifi Pro, you can now connect them to work harmoniously.
What does this mean for your smart devices?
With the update, Matter-enabled Google devices can now be connected to other Matter-enable devices from other brands. Since these Google Nest and Android devices have been automatically updated, “you don’t need to do anything.”
To control these smart devices, users will need a hub and they can use Google Home or any Nest device that can double as a hub for Matter. “These devices include the original Google Home speaker, Google Home Mini, Nest Mini, Nest Audio, Nest Hub (1st and 2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, and the new Nest Wifi Pro,” the company said.
Apart from this, Google also added Matter support for Fast Pair on Android which will quickly connect Matter-enabled devices to a home network.
Enhanced experience coming in 2023
Google says that its partnership with Samsung will provide an enhanced experience. “When you open the Google Home app, you’ll see Matter devices that have been set up with Samsung SmartThings and have the option to easily add those devices to Google Home and vice-versa,” the company announced.
Google also says that it will enable more Google devices with Matter and bring iOS support to the Google Home app next year.
