Google Chrome gets this ‘important’ fingerprint lock feature

Back in 2020, Google updated a couple of its apps on iOS with support for the operating system’s Privacy Screen feature allowing users to set up Touch ID or Face ID authentication to access them. Two years later, Google is bridging something similar to its Chrome web browser. 9to5Google has now reported that the company has updated the browser with the option to add an additional layer of security for Incognito mode.
As a part of the new addition, Chrome users can now secure the Incognito tabs with Fingerprint authentication. According to the report, Chrome now instantly locks the tabs that are secured with the fingerprint authentication.
Relaunching the browser will show grey colour tabs with Incognito logo asking users to unlock the tabs using their fingerprint with “Verify it’s you” message. Users also have the option to PIN instead of fingerprint lock and it can also be used to unlock the Incognito tabs.
At the locked Incognito tab screen, users will also get the option to return back to the regular tabs.
While the addition of the fingerprint lock is an important addition, it isn’t new. Samsung Internet web browser has been offering the option to use fingerprint and face unlock options for Private tabs for a couple of years now.
How to setup fingerprint lock for Incognito tabs on Chrome
Download and install the latest version of Chrome on your Android smartphone
Open Chrome and head to Settings → Privacy and security
Here, look for the option ‘Lock Incognito tabs when you leave Chrome’ and enable it.
It is important to note that the new Incognito lock feature is a gradual rollout and it will be rolling out in a phased manner. However, it can be manually enabled via Chrome flag.
Simply head to chrome://flags/#incognito-reauthentication-for-android and enable it.
