We have multiple web browsers – including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge, Apple’s Safari, Opera and more – to surf the internet but not all browsers have the same level of security. A new report by Atlas VPN has highlighted that Google Chrome is the most vulnerable web browser among the lot, followed by Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge and Safari.
Google Chrome: The most unsafe browser in 2022
The figures provided in this report are based on data from the vulnerability database (VulDB). This database has compiled the data from January 1 to October 5 and discovered that in this period of 10 months Google Chrome has already encountered 303 vulnerabilities. Meanwhile, the browser has faced a cumulative total of 3,159 vulnerabilities in its lifetime.

The report notes that Google Chrome is the only browser that has already been exposed to newly-discovered vulnerabilities for this month as well. These new security flaws are categorised as CVE-2022-3318, CVE-2022-3314, CVE-2022-3311, CVE-2022-3309, and CVE-2022-3307. The report also adds that each one of these vulnerabilities can corrupt a device’s memory, however, these issues can be patched by upgrading the Chrome browser to version 106.0.5249.61.
Mozilla Firefox is the second most vulnerable browser with 117 vulnerabilities, followed by Microsoft Edge with 103 security flaws in 2022. Microsoft’s Edge has encountered a total number of 806 vulnerabilities since its release and saw a 62% increase in the number of vulnerabilities from 2021.
Apple’s Safari recently crossed the one billion user mark to become the second most popular browser in the world. This browser encountered the lowest number of flaws — 26 documented vulnerabilities — in the year 2022. However, it is important to note that the Safari browser has faced a total number of 1,139 vulnerabilities in its lifetime.

Lastly, no vulnerabilities were documented for the Opera browser this year which has already faced 344 security flaws in its entire lifetime. The report also suggests that Chromium vulnerabilities may impact Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge and Opera browsers as they are built on the same Chromium engine.
