Google is reportedly working on Windows 11-style overlay scrollbars for Chrome browser. For those who don’t know, scrollbars in Windows 11 change shape whenever you approach them or use them. As per a report by Neowin, the same feature is now being tested in Chromium. This means upcoming experimental builds of Chrome browser for Windows 11 may have this feature. Microsoft has also been testing the overlay scrollbars feature in its Chromium based Edge browser since August last year. The move was announced by Edge executive Scott Low in a Tweet that read “To align with Windows 11’s look and feel, we’ve started experimenting with overlay scrollbars again in Edge (with the intent to upstream them in Chromium as well). Would love to hear folks’ thoughts! “
As spotted by Reddit user Leopeva64-2, a Microsoft engineer has confirmed that the overlay scrollbars feature will soon begin testing in Chrome. The comment “intent-to-implement for Win 11 overlay scrollbars will be posted shortly)” and “Once we contribute the new Win 11 style scrollbars to Chromium, it will probably not look the best in full screen.” were spotted in the bug associated with the new patch for Chromium Gerrit. This means that we may be able to see these new scrollbars on Chrome browser in the coming weeks.
A few months ago, Google also added other Windows 11 design elements to its browser. All context menus, popups and windows on the recently launched Windows 11 have rounded corners and now Google has incorporated similar design language in the Chrome web browser.
Google is also reportedly working to roll out a new Chrome feature that will make it easier for users to search through browsing history and bookmarks. As per a report by Chrome Story, the tech giant has added a new experimental flag to the Chromium repository. The report further reveals that the “Omnibox Site Search Starter Pack” flag will allow users to search for a specific link or page with the help of special tags.
