Google: Google Pay error accidentally sends cashbacks up to $1072 to some Pixel phone users, here’s what happened
A bug in Google Pay reportedly sent free money in cashback to some Pixel users. According to reports on Reddit, some Pixel users got money as random cashback rewards. This has happened in the US also the money was reportedly received only by Google Pixel users. No such case has been reported in India. Also, while in India Google Pay is a UPI app in the US it is a wallet.
Some of the users also later reported that Google Pay has since taken the amount back. But so far, there is no official comment or confirmation from Google about the error. The user reports say that in most cases the money received was spread across multiple cashbacks. Some users claimed they received the amount in 16 transactions, for some it was 10 and a few didn’t mention the count and just said that it filled their notifications.
Cashbacks go up to $1,072, came via multiple transactions
There are reports of Pixel users claiming to have erroneously received amounts such as $100, $240, and even $1,072 on the Google Pay app. Here are the reports from Pixel users on Reddit.
“I just got almost $100 in six different cashback rewards for “dogfooding the Google pay remittance experience”. What does that mean?” said one post.
“I chatted Google as soon as it started rolling in for me. They advised they were aware and the issue would be resolved in 24-48 hours. Appears to be a big mishap on their part. I wouldn’t take anything out that you can’t account for, in case they reverse the charges,” went another posts on Reddit.
“I did the same for over $580 my notifications were blowing up. I reached out as well. All the deposits are gone now. So was it a fluke was it legit. I’m part of the if it’s too good to be true group. Could I have transferred it maybe , could Google say oops. And I’m on the hook for it , most definitely. It’s a bummer for sure.”
“Over 150 for me so far, spread out over 16 rewards.”
“Yeah I got these six over like 10 minutes. I’m hoping more show up lol.”
Likely cause of the glitch
A user claimed that the wrong cashbacks were a result of a glitch caused due to changes/updates made by Google in Google Pay’s algorithms/interfaces/features and the vendor compatibility. Here’s the post:
“Presumably, they made a bunch of changes to Google Pay in its algorithms/interfaces/features and the vendor compatibility before full launch and are rewarding you for testing transactions for them before widespread launch.
Here: “Dogfooding allows Google and the integrator to test real world end user experience. Google will enable the form of payment on Google properties such as Play for Googlers. This enables local testing across a mix of devices, connections and OS versions.
Dogfood testing must occur in both the integrator’s and Google’s production environment.
Dogfood typically occurs for two weeks before launch. During this period the integrator and Google can expect to have daily syncs on the status of outstanding issues.
By the end of dogfood all launch blocking issues should be resolved. Dogfood can be extended if additional testing or fixes need to occur.
Once all three phases have been successfully completed, testing and certification is complete.”
