Google is retiring the Lite mode for Chrome mobile browser, here’s why

Google has decided to say goodbye to the Lite mode of the Chrome mobile browser that helped load pages faster by saving on data consumption. The company has made this move in view of the mobile data getting cheaper and faster in recent years. The Lite mode of Chrome was earlier known as the Data Saver mode which Google brought to the mobile version a few years ago.
Google Chrome’s support manager Craig announced in a post on Google Support forum that the company would discontinue the data saving feature in Chrome with the Chrome M100 for mobile, which is set for release on March 29, 2022. The company believes that with the mobile data costs going down in several countries and Chrome for mobile being improved so as to minimise data usage and speed up loading of web pages, it is time for the Lite mode to be discontinued.
“On March 29th, 2022, with the release of Chrome M100 to the stable channel, we’ll turn off Lite mode, a Chrome feature for Android that we introduced back in 2014 as Chrome Data Saver to help people use less mobile data on their phones and load web pages faster,” said Craig in the blog post. He also assured Chrome users that even with the Lite mode going away, “we remain committed to ensuring Chrome can deliver a fast webpage loading experience on mobile.”
Once the stable release of the Chrome M100 is underway, the Lite mode will also stop working on the older versions of the browser after March 29, 2022. Here’s to a faster Chrome experience on mobile data.
