Google may soon let you backup your Wear OS data

Wear OS is Google’s alternative to Apple’s watchOS operating system. While Wear OS has recently seen the light of the day with Samsung’s involvement, there’s one feature that it still misses out on. Those who’ve used a Wear OS-powered smartwatch must be aware that at of this moment it does not support backups.
This means that for those who are planning to move to a new smartphone while keeping their old smartwatch there’s no way to save the watch data while resetting it.
Well, it seems that might change soon as Google appears to be working on a backup solution for Wear OS. XDA Developers has discovered some lines of codes in the Google Play Services app for Android beta version 22.32.12 that indicate that Wear OS might get a backup feature after all.
The new backup feature, as per the report, will allow users to backup their smartwatch before resetting it and restore the data at the time of pairing it again with another device, somewhat similar to how it happens with Android smartphones. The report claims that the feature will be an opt-in feature
It comes as a surprise that Google took this long to realise that smartwatches too contain data and require a backup and restore feature.
Surprisingly, before Samsung switched to Wear OS, Tizen-powered smartwatches used to have a neat backup and restore feature via a Samsung account. Which was a handy feature.
The report has also claimed that the Wear OS backup will work with Google One which means users may need an active Google One subscription to be able to use this feature. Although the feature sounds great, it will be kind of a setback if Google limits it only to Google One subscribers as the feature is more than a necessity than a luxury and we think this should be a default feature and not some add-on.
Meanwhile, there’s no information when it will make the final release as the APK teardown has just revealed the ‘under development stage.
