Google has announced a new update for Meet which will add YouTube live streaming abilities to the video calling platform. According to a report by 9to5Google, live streaming for internal domains has been available in Google Meet for a long time now as it is needed to host internal meetings that have a large number of participants. Moreover, the public YouTube integration was initially pitched at education customers — for school events and board meetings which is now expanding to several other users. The report suggests that Google Meet’s YouTube live streaming capabilities are now rolling out for personal Gmail accounts as well as for multiple other Workspace tiers.
Google Meet’s YouTube live streaming feature availability
As per the report, the company has announced that Google Meet’s YouTube live streaming feature will be available to — Google Workspace Enterprise Starter, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, Education Plus, Teaching and Learning Upgrade customers, Google Workspace Individual users, Google One Premium plan members in select countries and to users with personal Google Accounts.
However, this feature will not be available to Google Workspace Essentials, Business Starter, Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Essentials, Education Standard, Education Fundamentals, Frontline, and Nonprofits, as well as legacy G Suite Basic and Business customers, the report claims.
The company has also confirmed that the new update has already started rolling out and will be fully available in the coming weeks. Apart from this, the report also suggests that personal Gmail accounts are recommended to subscribe to Google One Premium (2TB plans and greater) to “avoid the one-hour group calling limitation on free users.”
How will this new Google Meet feature work
Google has recommended some initial requirements for users to access the latest Meet feature. The company advises that to start a YouTube live stream through Meet, users should have their YouTube channel approved for live streaming in advance. Google has also noted that it can take up to 24 hours to get a channel approved for live streaming.
On the other hand, Workspace users need to get this feature enabled by their admin to access it. Once enabled, users can start a Livestream by visiting the Activities panel on Google Meet and then clicking on Live Streaming which will allow them to select a channel from the list, the report mentions.
Importance of this new Google Meet feature
The company has explained that Google Meet’s YouTube live streaming ability can be handy in situations where users want to present information to large audiences outside their organisation. Google Meet’s new feature also gives them the chance to pause and replay as required, or can even view the presentation later on.
