Google’s decision to end support for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users aligns with Microsoft’s decision to end support for these two operating systems starting January 10, 2023. An older version of Google Chrome will be available on these operating systems which will not receive the updates released for users and can put them at multiple risks.
Google Chrome version 110 on Windows 7/ 8.1
PCs running Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 will be able to access Google Chrome after 2023 with version 110, but this version will not get any security updates as well as version updates from next year. And using Google Chrome without regular security and version updates entails the risk of cybercrime. In fact, practically any browser without regular security updates is highly vulnerable to various types of cybercrimes as hackers have a better chance of exploiting older versions.
Just like Microsoft, Google has also recommended users upgrade their Windows versions of the system running one of these older operating systems. This will help users receive security updates for their operating systems and also access the latest Chrome features and security improvements.
Microsoft to end support for Windows 7/ 8.1 in 2023
Microsoft announced its plans to end support for Windows 7 in 2020. The Windows 7 operating system was introduced in 2009, and recent data suggests that several devices have been running the old operating system.
In 2021, the number of systems that were still on Windows 7 was estimated to be at least 100 million PCs. This means that several Windows PC users will soon be left with a significant security risk as these systems will not only run an unsupported operating system but will also have an unsupported web browser.
