Harry McKay accused of searching for free kicks by Brad Johnson, Carlton Blues

Carlton star Harry McKay has been called out for “searching” for free kicks in his team’s loss to St Kilda on Friday night.

McKay was influential, pulling down seven marks and kicking two goals in Carlton’s 15-point loss to the Saints, and received three free kicks throughout the match.

However, Bulldogs legend Brad Johnson pointed out a worrying tendency from the reigning Coleman Medal winner to go to ground in marking contests.

“I thought there were a couple of occasions (where he played for free kicks),” Johnson told SEN’s Crunch Time.

“He probably went to the deck searching for a free kick, where he could have used his big 100kg frame and actually stood up and brought the ball to ground.

“He actually won a free kick in the last quarter when it didn’t look like it was there but he got it… he missed the snap shot.

“On a couple of occasions, he probably could have stood up a lot stronger in contests.”

McKay kicked 58 goals in a career-best 2021 season, and has backed it up with 31 majors in 12 appearances this season for the Blues.
