The decision on who receives the money is based both on their date of birth, whether they receive certain benefits, and if they live with another person who qualifies for the cash.

The benefits which could make someone eligible include Pension Credit, Income Support, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance or income-related Employment and Support Allowance benefits.

People who were born on or before September 25, 1942 and live alone, or without anybody else who qualifies for the payment, should be paid the full £600.

If someone lives alone but was born between September 26, 1942 and September 25, 1956, they will receive £500 for the Winter Fuel Payment.
