High blood pressure: Prunes could reduce hypertension and lower cholesterol

0

Too much cholesterol in the blood can contribute to atherosclerosis, which is the narrowing of blood vessel walls; what happens is that low-density lipoprotein coats the artery walls, hardens, and narrows the passageway of blood. One sweet snack can help to lower high blood pressure and reduce cholesterol levels. This double whammy of health benefits could help to save your life – if other healthy lifestyle measures are followed.

The National Library of Medicine cited research from Shifa College of Medicine, Pakistan.

In the research study, the cardioprotective effects of prunes was investigated.

The placebo controlled clinical trial involved 259 pre-hypertensive participants.

Their blood pressure readings ranged from 120/80mmHg to 139/90mmHg – just below the threshold of high blood pressure, which is 140/90mmHg.

Some participants drank prune juice, which had either three or six prunes soaked in a glass of water overnight.

Meanwhile, the control group only had a glass of plain water early in the morning on an empty stomach.

Blood pressure measurements were taken fortnightly for eight weeks.

In addition, blood samples were taken at the beginning and end of the research study.

DON’T MISS

As well as being mindful to what you eat, it also helps to be careful with what you drink.

Alcohol, for example, can raise your blood pressure over time – especially if you drink on a regular basis.

Everybody is strongly encouraged to have alcohol-free days throughout the week.

Moreover, people are advised to stick within the NHS’s 14 units weekly limit.
