Google uses AI to differentiate the phone calling experience on Pixel from other Android phones. The tech giant has now teased that Pixel Call Screen will leverage conversational AI to get more advanced capabilities. According to a report by 9to5Google, Jonathan Eccles, the group product manager for the Phone by Google app, has revealed the company’s plans to further improve the calling experience on Pixel. The company’s plans were revealed by Eccles during the latest episode of the Made by Google Podcast.
Google’s plans to improve Pixel calling experience with AI
Eccles mentioned that Google is planning to use conversational AI to “solve bigger and more important problems” around “unwanted calls,” which include spam to robocalling.
The company is planning a “future where you should never ever, ever be annoyed at the thought of your phone ringing. It should always be a moment where you assume it’s something important or something delightful. Nothing should ever bother you. And at the same time, you should never ever feel like you’re ineffective or unproductive on any phone call.”
How Google is planning to accomplish this goal
To accomplish this goal, “multi-step, multi-turn conversational AI could open a lot of interesting doors in terms of creating this protective and helpful layer at the front of every incoming call,” notes Eccles.
He also mentioned that Google thinks that “AI is what takes you there into the future.” And stay tuned this year, there’ll be some things coming up in the world of solving for unwanted calls that I think are going to be really exciting.”

The report mentions that Google may apply LaMDA — the large language model (LLM) to Call Screen. LaMDA also powers Bard and is designed specifically for holding conversations. Applying LaMDA may improve the feature to detect the caller’s intentions.
When to expect this Pixel calling feature
As per the report, Google’s more advanced AI features in Call Screen may arrive with the Pixel 7a which is expected to launch at the I/O 2023 event in May. These advanced AI features are also likely to be added to the Pixel 8 smartphone series which is expected to arrive in the fall of 2023. Eccles also mentioned that Pixel’s Clear Calling feature will need the latest Tensor G2 chip to work.
