How to look younger: Disguise age spots with concealer trick

0

Make-up expert Saffron Hughes from FalseEyelashes.co.uk has shared her top tips on how to “disguise age marks”. One can do this at home using specific products and methods.

When one ages, the skin’s pigmentation starts to change, sometimes resulting in darker areas and spots on the face.

When this happens, Saffron advised: “Use a creamy lipstick in a peach shade as a colour corrector to neutralise the colour of the skin.

“First, prep your skin with your favourite primer to increase the longevity of your make-up.

“If the spots you’re concealing are particularly dark, apply a small amount of peach colour corrector and dab onto the area with your ring finger – this also works with peach or orange lipstick, too.

“Colour theory suggests that, as orange and peach colours are opposite browns and purples on the colour wheel they’re going to neutralise the excess colour, making it easier to cover with concealer.”

Saffron went on to recommend using two types of concealer as part of one’s make-up routine.

“As a make-up artist, I use different shades of concealer all over the face, given that most clients have a slightly different undertone on their cheeks to their forehead.

“However, having many different shades of concealer isn’t feasible for the everyday make-up wearer.

“A touch of concealer goes a long way and it’s much easier to add more product to the face than it is to take it away, as you risk also removing primer and colour corrector.

“Using your fingers to apply can cause the application to be heavy-handed, which is why I use concealer brush on clients.

“After applying a thin layer, wait a few seconds for the concealer to oxidise and settle onto the skin then use the brush to blend. Keep building these thin layers until you’re happy with the coverage and finally, set with a finely milled setting powder to lock that product into place.”

Dr Hiba Injibar, a consultant dermatologist at Harley Street’s Dermasurge Clinic, previously told Express.co.uk how age spots and darker areas on the skin appear not only with age but with bad skincare too.

During winter, if the skin is not properly looked after, it “loses moisture and becomes dry”, which means “hyperpigmentation can appear more visible on the skin”.

“This is most noticeable on the face, chest and back of the hands, and whilst hyperpigmentation isn’t necessarily harmful, it can make otherwise healthy skin look older,” Dr Injibar said.

“As we age, our skin is less likely to repair itself, which is when we notice the after-effects of sun damage and age spots occur.

“If you would like to reduce hyperpigmentation and its visibility, consult your doctor or dermatologist who can recommend a number of age spot therapies.

“These include chemical peels which remove the top layers of skin to reveal smoother skin, laser therapies which destroy the melanin-producing cells that cause hyperpigmentation, and prescription medications with retinoids which will gradually fade the appearance over several months.”
