How to look younger: Skincare guru on the ‘only product proven to reverse signs of ageing’

Skincare guru Matt Randon describes himself as a “skincare fairy godmother”, sharing his tips and tricks with an audience of 611.5K followers on his TikTok page @mattrandon. While your skin naturally begins ageing as young as 25, Matt shared some tips and tricks which can actually “reverse the signs of ageing” and “reduce the appearance of wrinkles”.

These include a regular skincare routine, as well as making certain lifestyle changes to preserve the health of your skin. Matt explained: “Women age faster than men but don’t worry I’m here to give you some tips on how to stop ageing. The first is going to be using retinol.

“It’s actually the only skincare product proven to reverse the signs of ageing hence reducing the appearance of wrinkles.”

Retinol is an over-the-counter formulation of vitamin A that is applied topically to the skin and has been found to reduce the effects of ageing and acne. According to experts from Healthine, retinol keeps pores clear by reducing the buildup of skin cells.

They explained: “[Retinol] does not remove dead skin cells, as many other products for mature skin do. Instead, the small molecules that make up retinol go deep beneath the epidermis (outer layer of skin) to your dermis.

“Once in this middle layer of skin, retinol helps neutralise free radicals. This helps boost the production of elastin and collagen, which creates a ‘plumping’ effect that can reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and enlarged pores.”

Matt added that you should also wear a high factor sunscreen every day. However, even with a good skincare routine, the dietary choices you make can go a long way towards ageing. Matt explained: “Unfortunately you’re going to have to stop drinking.

“Drinking even just two glasses of wine a day is going to make you age twice as fast.”

Drinking alcohol has a dehydrating effect which can sap your skin of moisture and elasticity, leading to sagginess, dryness and wrinkles. This can, over time, make the skin appear old.

In fact, even one night of heavy drinking can emphasise the appearance of lines and wrinkles on your face. However, it’s not just about what you’re drinking, the food you eat also plays a role in the appearance of your skin.

“Third is that you’re going to want to cut down on that cake,” said Matt. “Unfortunately, sugars cause inflammation in your body and that translates into more wrinkles ageing twice as fast.”

Skin is composed of collagen and elastin, which make our skin supple and soft. Experts from Unitypoint.org explained: “Sugar causes cross-linking of collagen, resulting in stiffening and loss of elasticity of our skin. The more sugar we have, the more our skin starts to suffer.”

Instead, you should try and enjoy a well-rounded healthy diet rich in vitamins and minerals typically found in vegetables such as broccoli, watercress, bell peppers and berries. Nuts and avocados provide healthy fats and vitamin E, which may help to repair skin tissue and retain moisture.
