The show highlighted his bizarre, often hilarious interactions, which gave viewers a rare insight into the impact of Pick’s disease, a rare dementia that affects parts of the brain that control emotions, behaviour, personality and language.

The family had to arrange for Colin to be cared for in his own house when residential homes refused to take him because of his occasional aggressive behaviour, his frequent rudeness and a compulsion to talk graphically and often about sex.

Colin’s illness first surfaced more than a decade ago but the family had faced a crisis in 2014 when his wife Sarah Fabian Baddiel, who was his main carer, died suddenly aged 75, after 54 years of marriage.

With David’s touching social media updates on his father’s health, Colin will be remembered by many.
