Harrison Ford may turn 81 years old this year, but he is still charging around the world as the irascible (and often unwilling) adventurer Indiana Jones. The fifth film in the franchise just dropped its first official trailer. Amid all the excitement, it revealed that we will be getting double the fun with scenes of Ford also playing Indy as a much younger man, thanks to some impressive technical wizardry. And rather than the usual long wait, fans only have a couple of months before the film hits the big screen.

The Dial of Destiny will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on May 18 and open in cinemas worldwide from June 30.

Harking back to the classic adventures of the earliest three films, which were set in the late 1930’s, this one is set primarily in 1969.

Fleabag creator Phobe Waller-Bridge appears in the trailer as Indy’s god-daughter, Helena Shaw, daughter of his friend Basil (played by Toby Jones).

In an emotional speech, Indy tells her: “Three times in my life I’ve seen things, I’ve been tortured by voodoo, shot nine times, including once by your father… But I’ve been looking for this all my life.”

The de-aged scenes show the earlier years when Indy and Basil were hunting the Dial of Destiny.

The film also includes a welcome return for a familiar face, with John Rhys’Jones popping up again as trusty ally Salah. There is also a rather grizzled Antonio Banderas as a new character and friend, Renaldo.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will be the first film in the series that has not been directed by Steven Spielberg or written by George Lucas. Both act as producers on the latest instalment, but it is directed by James Mangold.

With a reputed budget of almost $300million, Indy will need to deliver a lot of treasure at the box office but, despite his permanent scowl, things are looking pretty good so far in the explosive trailer…
