Instagram has changed its algorithm. The changes announced have a subtle message for Reel users: Please keep your TikTok videos away. Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, said, “If you create something from scratch, you should get more credit than if you are resharing something that you found from someone else. We’re going to do more to try and value original content more, particularly compared to reposted content.”
Though Mosseri refrained from directly naming TikTok, the message is loud and clear that it’s time Reels users stop sharing TikTok videos from other people and come up with their own ideas. Mosseri said that Instagram is adding new features that offer users new ways to tag and improve ranking. These are:
* Product Tags: Product tags have been there for some time and now they are available to all users. It allows users to tag specific products in their posts.
* Enhanced Tags: This means that users can now add descriptive tag about themselves like say a ‘Dancer’ or a ‘Photographer’. This will show up alongside their handle in image tags, every time they are tagged in a post. These tags can be set in Instagram profile settings.
* Ranking for originality: No guesses here, Instagram will start promoting original content on the platform lot more. “Creators are so important to the future of Instagram, and we want to make sure that they are successful and get all the credit they deserve,” he added further stressing on the importance of originality,” said Mosseri.

Mosseri, however, admitted that so far there is no sure shot way to really tell if the content is original. He said that it’s hard, and “we will iterate over time.”
Incidentally, this is not the first time that Instagram has taken steps to discourage Reels users from sharing TikTok conent. In 2021, the Facebook-owned platform tweaked its algorithm to downrank reshared Reels with TikTok logo.
