Jack Smethurst died at home while surrounded by his family. The TV star, 89, was best known for playing the role of Eddie Booth in the 1970’s sitcom, Love Thy Neighbour.

After starring as Eddie Booth, the actor went on to play himself in the feature film adaptation of hit ITV show, Man About the House, the following year.

He also played four different characters in Coronation Street over the years,

In 1998, he starred in his last TV appearance as Bob Bellfield in sitcom, Dinnerladies.

The sad news was confirmed by his son Adam, who broke the news on Twitter.

“He was great fun to work with.

“I will always have fond memories of the times we spent together. May he rest in peace,” he posted.

Robin Askwith penned: “So sorry to hear about the passing of my friend Jack Smethurst.

“We loved working with each other and I taught his son cricket on a beach in Perth WA!!
