Jane Fonda, 85, made her major breakthrough in the movie world more than 57 years ago when she took on the starring role of notorious outlaw Catherine in the 1965 film Cat Ballou.

Virtually unrecognisable at a much younger age, Jane – whose character was formerly an aspiring school teacher – looked far too innocent and angelic to play a gangster.

Yet she narrowly avoided being executed in the suspenseful movie, after being saved right in the nick of time.

Prior to that role, she also made a notable appearance as nurse Isabel in the 1962 comedy Period of Adjustment and as a flirtatious and fun girl holding onto her “virtue” in 1963’s Sunday In New York.

Yet her first ever on-screen debut – which came the same year as she entered Broadway – was the romantic drama Tall Story back in 1960.
