Jesse Bromwich backs Billy Slater to be Craig Bellamy’s successor at Melbourne

Melbourne Storm co-captain Jesse Bromwich believes Billy Slater would be a more than able replacement for Craig Bellamy, should the master coach call time on his career.

Bellamy signed a deal last year that will see him remain at the Storm through to the end of 2026, but the contract includes options for him to take on other roles aside from being the head coach.

Slater is set to take charge of Queensland’s State of Origin team for the first time this year, and his old teammate believes the former Storm No.1 has what it takes to eventually be Bellamy’s successor.

“When he was a player, it felt like he was a coach as he was so vocal,” Bromwich said.

“He’s got so much knowledge about the game and he will be a really good coach. I know he is doing Queensland, he’s going to be a really good coach. He’s just really committed to the game, loves the game, and I’ve never seen anyone so passionate about our game.

“If someone like Billy Slater was coach of our club, how good would that be? I think he’s going to be a really good coach whether now or in a few years time – I would be really excited if that was to happen.”

There is some uncertainty around when Bellamy will finish up as the Storm’s head coach, but Bromwich refused to put any pressure on the 62-year-old.

Bellamy hasn’t committed to the job beyond this current season.

“I know everyone wants Craig to stay, but he deserves to make his own decision,” Bromwich said.

“He is a huge part of this club. We’ve had a lot of changes at this club in my time here and the consistent thing is Craig and what he brings to the table.

“He is the best coach I’ve ever been coached by and it would be really good to see him stay, but I want him to be happy and I’m sure he will be involved in this club in some capacity, whether full-time or part-time. I know he will still be involved.”

The Storm have enjoyed a solid start to the season, winning their first two matches before a 28-24 loss to Parramatta in round three.

Bromwich and Bellamy’s side will host the Canterbury Bulldogs at AAMI Park in round four, with the match to take place at 4:05pm (AEDT) on Sunday.
