But Raducanu’s Australian Open was cut short when she crashed out in the second round while suffering with blistering, leaving her unable to grip the racket, serve and hit forehands.

It was a valiant effort from the Brit, who turned to her slice to keep herself in the 6-4 4-6 6-3 match for more than two hours before losing to Danka Kovinic.

And although McEnroe was critical of her coaching decision, he wished Raducanu well for her future in tennis and even defended her against backlash over her new sponsorships.

“It would be unbelievable if she’s around for the next 10 years doing well, that would be outstanding. She seems like a sweet girl, she’s got game, charisma, she’s got everything,” he admitted.

“I’m pulling for her, it’s not going to be easy, I’m sure she’s trying to figure it all out right now.
