While the Royal Family is accustomed to luxuries most non-royals are not, they also have certain rules and regulations they must adhere to due to their place in society. One such rule is that royal women should not wear clothes that are too revealing.

Kate Middleton rarely puts a foot wrong when it comes to fashion.

Whether it’s a lavish gown or a smart blazer and trousers combo, the Duchess typically looks absolutely wonderful.

Whatever the occasion, she is sure to look modest and elegant, in keeping with royal protocol.

However, there was one instance where Kate deviated slightly from royal norms when she showed a glimpse of her cleavage in a dress.

Daena Borrowman from jewellerybox said: “There are dozens of protocols in place that stylists and dressers of the royals have to familiarise themselves with to prevent working royals from landing into embarrassing fashion faux pas.

“It is customary for senior royals to dress modestly during public appearances, in order to preserve the sanctity of the Royal Family.”

One way this is ensured is that “royal women are discouraged from showing off their cleavage”.

For example, Princess Diana would carry her clutch purse against her chest when exiting vehicles to avoid anybody getting too close a look.

The floor-length dress had sheer sleeves and was floor-length, boasting a trail of gold patterns starting just under the chest area and ending at the bottom of the skirt.

Despite the gown being incredibly beautiful and intricate, it was the very simple design of the chest that was the most eye-catching.

The dress had a sweetheart neckline and the material gathered over the bust was plain white.

A pattern of gold trailed from both shoulders to just under the bust which seemed to accentuate the area, with her lack of necklace doing the same.

The sweetheart neckline revealed some of the Duchess’ cleavage which is not typical of senior royal women.

However, Kate did look undoubtedly stunning, accessorising with a gold Wilbur and Gussie clutch and earrings and bracelet from Zoraida.

She opted to re-wear this beautiful gown at the BAFTAs in 2020, pairing it with a layered Van Cleef & Arpels necklace and matching statement earrings.

The Duchess also went for a different clutch and wore her hair in a chic up-do as opposed to her previous half-up half-down do.
