The halls also have one historic tradition known as the High Table which sees a small selection of top students invited along for a posh three-course dinner each week to join a high-ranking member of the university, such as a Professor, or an influential former student for an intellectual discussion in the dining room.
Monica Burns, a former resident at St. Salvator’s, described her memories of the random tradition in a blog post for the Museum of the University of St. Andrews.
She wrote: “As formal and intimidating as this sounds, what I found was that it was just fancy embellishments over what is just a friendly and social dinner with your friends and members of university staff.”
The former student explained that there is also plenty of alcohol on offer to loosen students’ nerves and encourage them to speak freely, with a sherry reception to start and a glass of port in the Regent’s Room to finish.
