TL;DR

  • At least one report says there will be no Classic variation of the Galaxy Watch 5.
  • Leaked codenames of the smartwatch strongly suggest a Pro variant is on its way.

Update: May 5, 2022 (6:34 AM ET): Folks over at GalaxyClub have discovered code names for the Galaxy Watch 5. Samsung is reportedly developing the Watch 5 under the codename “Heart.” Different models of the smartwatch include the following:

Heart-S: A smaller version (40 or 42 mm) with model number SM-R90x.
Heart-L: A larger version (44 or 46 mm) with model number SM-R91x.
Heart-Pro: The alleged Pro version with model number SM-R92x. The Pro version seems to only exist in one size variant.

The fact that Samsung has “Pro” in the codename is a strong hint that a Galaxy Watch 5 Pro is in the making. However, this new information is contrary to the leak in the original article below that the upcoming Samsung Watch only has two models.

Original article: April 22, 2022 (12:59 PM ET): Fans of the Classic Galaxy Watch variation may be in for a disappointment, with reports indicating Samsung may ditch it with the Galaxy Watch 5 series.

The Classic model traditionally featured a slightly larger design and included high-end materials. The Classic also had a larger rotating bezel around the glass face, giving it a more traditional look than the sleeker base model. On the inside, the two models were mostly identical, meaning there were minimal performance or battery-life benefits included with the upgraded variation.

While SamMobile‘s report is light on details, hopefully, the anticipated Pro model will incorporate some of the Classic’s visual characteristics, providing a viable option for customers who still want that classic watch look.
