Leading hair expert explains how mature women can maintain long, healthy hair

Many women believe that when they reach a certain age, they must chop all their hair off immediately in order to avoid looking older. However, it is possible for mature ladies to enjoy luscious, long locks well into their 40s, 50s, 60s and beyond – and look younger while doing it.

Express.co.uk spoke exclusively to Inanch Emir, creative director and founder of world-renowned hair salon Inanch London.

The leading expert dispelled the myth that women should cut their hair short at a certain age, arguing that hair quality matters far more than hair age.

Women will often spend their youth growing their hair long, only to cut it all off when they reach a certain age.

This may be because their hair has become thin and limp over time, or they may incorrectly assume long hair is only for the young.

However, Inanch does not see it that way, explaining that as long as hair is in good condition, the length of it is irrelevant. In fact, with the right factors involved, long hair can make mature ladies look much younger.

The expert explained that as women get older and go through menopause their hair starts to thin a little.

However, this does not mean an automatic life sentence of short or shoulder-length hair.

Inanch said: “Gone are the days when they used to tell women not to have long hair after a certain age.”

When it comes to hair, the expert argued that quality is far more important than the age of the person.

“If the hair is good quality hair then there is no age limit. When the hair is fine and wispy there is an age limit.”

For women whose hair has become thin and wispy with age, advancements in hair technology has meant they can still enjoy long, youthful locks.

Inanch explained: “Nowadays because people have hair extensions, they can have long hair for a lot longer.

For those who want to maintain their long locks – naturally or with extensions – Inanch recommended one style that can be particularly flattering.

“Not necessarily on me, but on some people I think a high ponytail can be like a facelift, as it pulls everything up.”

She explained that on some faces it can “snatch everything up”, as well as looking clean and tidy.
