A new long-term deal was signed last year though with many expecting Hamilton to bypass the record haul of seven World Championships.

It’s not clear now whether Mercedes are still “supporting” the young Italian driver Wolff mentioned four years ago.

But they have a number of young prospects in their Junior Team with Frederik Vesti, who is making his debut in the F2 Championships this year, joining at the start of 2021.

Arrangements appear to be in place for Mercedes to continue the developments of their young drivers.

And Wolff has made it clear that finding Hamilton’s replacement has been a long mission for the Silver Arrows.
