Lionesses fans ‘disgusted’ as only four players recognised in New Year Honours list | Football | Sport

Sir Hugh Robertson, who is the chairman of the honours committee, attempted to justify the decision when asked why the entire team were not recognised. He said: “The approach that we’ve tried to take with this is when we have these events there is a danger in sort of carpet bombing the entire squad because then you get people who’ve done five minutes on the pitch and get an award. So what we’ve tried to do is stick to the principle of the honours which is to recognise excellence and to recognise extraordinary contributions.”

Some were not pleased with the explanation though, with Daily Mail reporter Dominic King labelling it nonsense: “If Gareth Southgate’s squad had won the World Cup, every member would have got the recognition in the honours list. It’s puzzling, then, why every member of Sarina Wiegman’s squad hasn’t been honoured. Sir Hugh Robertson’s explanation for the exclusivity is nonsense, too,” he wrote.

Despite some claims, the Telegraph reported last year that only Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling and Gareth Southgate would’ve received honours had they won the Euro 2020 final against Italy.
