Liverpool news: Steven Gerrard could benefit from Jurgen Klopp’s plan if he joins Reds | Football | Sport

Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard could eventually benefit from Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool plan if he returns to Anfield to replace the German. After a lengthy period of transfer inactivity, the Reds appear to be planning for the future which, given Klopp’s contract situation, could leave the squad in a healthy state even after his departure.

Gerrard is still less than three months into his tenure at Villa Park.

But the former England captain’s first foray into Premier League management has been hugely promising thus far, after a successful three-year stint with Rangers.

While Gerrard is still in the process of building up his Villa side, links to the Reds are unlikely to die down completely with Klopp’s contract set to expire in 2024.

Liverpool would undoubtedly be keen to hand the German new terms, but it is expected that he will call time on a fruitful spell with the club after nine years.

“This is the way the club is doing it, pretty much before I even arrived and I am absolutely used to it but that’s the way it is.”

Indeed, the Reds demonstrated that during the January transfer window, when they successfully swooped for one youthful star and narrowly missed out on another.

Luis Diaz is only a few weeks past his 25th birthday, almost five years younger than both Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane – both of whom he is likely to provide competition for after his initial £38million move from Porto.

The Colombian winger has scored at a remarkable rate in Portugal this campaign, and could hit the ground running if given the chance to prove himself by Klopp.

Liverpool’s commitment to youth would have been even more evident if they had completed the £8m transfer of Fulham youngster Fabio Carvalho on deadline day.

The 19-year-old has dazzled for the Championship leaders this season, and with his contract set to expire in just a few months, the Reds are reportedly working on a free summer move behind the scenes.

A promising crop of in-house youngsters could also stand Gerrard in good stead if he takes the job in 2024, with the likes of Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones continuing to progress at an impressive rate.

All told, the gradual squad transformation on Merseyside is likely to have a lasting impact on life after Klopp – whether that be with Gerrard at the helm, or anybody else for that matter.
