Liverpool news: Thiago has commitment questioned due to constant ‘strange’ injuries | Football | Sport

Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara has had his commitment questioned by former Reds player Glen Johnson with the 38-year-old suggesting the Spaniard picks up ‘strange’ injuries. The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich man missed six games earlier this season with a hamstring injury while he was also missing from the 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest with an ear infection.

Thiago has become a key player at Anfield since his arrival from Bayern in 2020. While he struggled during his first season at the club, he came alive during the last campaign with no one in the Liverpool squad capable of replicating his creative ability in midfield. It is no coincidence that most of the Reds’ best performances this year have come while he has been in the side.

However, much of his spell on Merseyside has been lost on the sidelines. He has missed a huge 51 matches as a result of illness or injury and his teammates have suffered in his absence.

Now, former Liverpool right-back Johnson has questioned the Spanish international’s commitment after missing so many games, suggesting his play style means he should not pick up many injuries.

“It’s one of those, Thiago is great when he plays and you wish he could play every week,” he told Midnite. “But he should be fit for every game every week, because he’s that player that strolls about and does not sprint, so he shouldn’t have as many muscle injuries, Thiago doesn’t get hurt in a game is what I mean.

“Thiago got this last night, a bad ear infection. There was no chance for him to do anything. We drove him home,” the German explained. “The decision was taken at 5:15am. He woke up in the middle of the night and had the problem.

“I woke up an hour later, but the decision was taken the moment he woke up and the doctor went there and they went to the hospital. It didn’t work out, though. Yes, he was in that much pain he had to go to the hospital.”
