Man City news: Phil Foden signs £55m new contract and vows to repay Pep Guardiola | Football | Sport

Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden has put pen to paper on a new five-year deal worth £55million which will keep him at the Etihad until the summer of 2027. City have been negotiating the new £225,000-a-week deal for months as they sought to reward his status as one of City’s key men.

It makes Foden, 22, one of the best-paid young talents in world football. The England and City forward insisted his bumper new contract was a “dream come true”. And he said he wants to repay his boyhood club and manager Pep Guardiola with more goals and trophies.

“It’s an extremely proud moment for me and my family,” he said. “Obviously being a massive City fan myself and coming through the academy, to extend my stay here is all I’ve ever dreamed of.

“This year, I think I’ve been scoring a lot more goals so hopefully I can keep going in that direction. I don’t like to put too much pressure on myself.

“I just try to keep focused and keep performing on the pitch. I think I’m just myself.” Foden has already helped City land 11 trophies, and he insisted there was every chance of adding more this season.

“We have such a great team. Everyone’s together, we all fight for each other on the pitch and it’s just really healthy at the moment,” he said. Foden also credited manager Guardiola with helping turning him into one of the most exciting young talents in world football.

Foden added: “He’s amazing. I think he’s made me ten times the player I was. He’s improved all aspects of my game and I’m just thankful to have him here.”

The City attacker will try to give an immediate return on the club’s investment when he returns to the starting line-up to face Liverpool on Sunday having been rested in Europe this week.

Previewing the clash, Guardiola said: “The game will be dictated by what happens on the pitch, not because we are in front [in the league]. My opinion I have for this team [Liverpool], nothing has changed. They always have been and always will be [our biggest title threat].

“I know the quality they have, they know the quality we have. If there were 10 games left, I think Liverpool could not catch the top of the league, in this case, Arsenal. But being in the position we are in, with the World Cup, anything can happen.”
