Man Utd transfer news: Scholes thinks another Fletcher and O’Shea may arrive this summer | Football | Sport

Manchester United icon Paul Scholes thinks Marcel Sabitzer would be a good squad player for the club – just like Darren Fletcher and John O’Shea once were at Old Trafford. The Austria international joined from Bayern Munich back in the January transfer window. And he’s impressed ever since, with the midfielder’s long-term future over in Germany currently shrouded in uncertainty.

Speaking ahead of United’s Europa League clash with Sevilla, Owen Hargreaves hailed Sabitzer by saying: “I’m sure the club will be looking at it, I’m sure Sabitzer will be looking at it.

“He’s a good squad player, but I think the midfield has been an issue over the past couple of seasons and now Casemiro’s in there with Bruno and Eriksen, all of a sudden that team is so strong.

“I think they’re actually unbeaten when they play together this season and that is truly remarkable, it just shows you the team, looking at the numbers it just blows you away.

“So, I think ten Hag will know that, the fans will know that when they see it, and they’ll think how can we get better? What can we add to it?

“It’s a centre forward, that’s what United need, it’s a centre forward. They have a fabulous midfield, they could maybe do with somebody a little bit more powerful to drop in.”

“He gets the ball – Fred, people like that – so as a squad player.”

A third former United star also discussed Sabitzer before kick off.

And Peter Schmeichel, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, insisted the Austrian has flourished despite being a ‘weird’ signing to begin with.

“I have to say that Sabitizer has come in from absolutely nowhere, it was a weird signing on many levels,” said the Dane.

“That he wanted to leave Bayern most of all and that Bayern allowed him to leave. I wondered why we needed him.

“But he has impressed me so much, I hope that there is a clause in there that we can sign him because he is an asset.

“When he was on the pitch the other day, he was magnificent. If we sign someone like Sabitizer, you have Eriksen, Casemiro, McTominay and Fred. That is quality.”

As for Sabitzer himself, meanwhile, the United star admitted his future was currently out of his hands.

“United made it clear that it was a project until the summer,” said the 29-year-old.

“Then we’ll see. Until then, I want to give everything here. It’s a loan deal without an option. In the summer, the situation will be evaluated.

“But I can say that I found my place here.

“Now I know the Premier League and can say there’s nothing better, more intense and tougher.

“Every game is a fight. It’s the best league in the world. When you play once here you know it’s incomparable.

“Of course my thoughts are on United, especially with the trust I get from Erik ten Hag – it’s very positive.

“But I’m not the only one who decides.”
