On ITV’s This Morning, a Martin Lewis supporter wrote in to express his gratitude to Martin for helping him uncover £4,000 of overpaid bills. Bob said: “I would like to thank Martin for speaking about checking your council tax band.

“I checked my band against other bungalows in my area and found their bands to B whereas mine is C.

“I challenged this with the valuation agency and gave them all the necessary information.

“I am now waiting for a refund of just under £4,000 for overpayment from the last 30 years. I can’t believe it. Thank you, Martin.”

Mr Lewis explained stated there are up to 400,000 people in England and Scotland in the wrong band.

“This is just unbelievable,” he added.

Data from moneysavingexpert.com found that more than £150 million is owed to council tax-payers across 364 local authority areas in England, Scotland and Wales.

Getting one’s council tax band decreased could mean them paying between £100 and £400 less each year.

Repayments can be backdated from when people moved into the property – as far back as when the tax started in 1993.

To find a price quickly, people can use a website which offers free historic sales price information. These include Nethouseprices, Zoopla and Rightmove.

Britons need to street name and it’ll tell someone the prices of all properties sold there since 2000.

Then people can estimate what their property would’ve been worth back in 1991, and what band it’s in.

Episodes of This Morning air every weekend at 10am.
