Marvel’s Joe Quesada Makes Surprise Return to DC Comics

0

Marvel’s Joe Quesada recently ended his long tenure at the company after serving first as Editor-in-Chief of Marvel Comcis and then executive vice president and creative director for Marvel Entertainment. So where does a Marvel icon go from there? Why, to DC Comics, of course.

DC made the surprise announcement during the Jim Lee & Friends panel at NYCC today. Quesada will be getting back to his roots as an artist and designing a number of new covers for various DC titles i n2023. The first of these will appear as a variant cover for January’s Batman #131, followed by another variant for February’s Batman #132.

While it’s slightly surreal to see Quesada working at DC after so many years, he did spend a good portion of his early career at the company. Quesada co-created Azrael in 1992’s Batman: The Sword of Azrael and also an updated version of The Ray. It remains to be seen if he’ll stick to drawing covers or if Quesada has new, full-length comcis in the works at DC.

The panel also shed some new light on what’s to come with DC’s Milestone imprint as the company celebrates its 30th anniversary next year. That includes the launch of a new Static series called Static: Shadows of Dakota, a followup to Static: Season One. The new series will be written by Vita Ayala and illustrated by Nikolas Draper-Ivey and ChrisCross. Reginlad Hudlin and Leon Chills are teaming up for the crossover series Icon vs. Hardware. And DC will also publish an anthology issue called Milestone 30th Anniversary Special. All three books will debut in February 2023.

Also featured at the panel were Marc Silvestri’s Batman/Joker: The Deadly Duo, John Ridley Batman: One Bad Day – The Penguin and GCPD: The Blue Wall and Spencer Ackerman, Evan Narcisse and Eric Battle’s DC Black Label series Waller vs. Wildstorm.
