Masters past winners list: All the winners of green jacket at Augusta National from 2000-present

Angel Cabrera, seen here with 2008 winner Trevor Immelman during the green jacket presentation, won the 2009 Masters in a sudden-death playoff. In doing so, he claimed his second major and became the first Masters winner from South America.

Cabrera seemed to have blown his chances with an errant tee shot on the first extra hole (18), needing to chip out from the trees, yet nailed his third shot to six feet from the pin and made the par putt. Campbell was eliminated, leaving Perry and Cabreba to play the 10th; where par was enough to give the Argentine victory at age 39.

But Cabrera has had a stunning fall from grace.

His picture might still be on the wall of champions at Augusta, but you won’t see him at the champion’s dinner.

That’s because Angel Cabrera is still in an Argentine prison.

Initially sent to prison for assaulting, threatening and harassing his former partner, in late 2022 he was sentenced to an additional two years and four months for assaulting another former girlfriend.

“A lot of kids grow up without a role model and make some bad decisions, their anger within them takes over,” said Charlie Epps, a Houston golf pro who has a father-son relationship with Cabrera. “But it doesn’t justify doing the wrong thing.”

“There was no crime,” his lawyer, Carlos Hairabedian told The Associated Press via phone from Argentina, alleging the charges were brought “out of spite and resentment.” Hairabedian claimed that in the reported cases “the common denominator is that there was no physical violence but an exchange of high-sounding words.”
