Max George hits back as girlfriend Maisie Smith’s voice is panned by Strictly critic | Celebrity News | Showbiz & TV
Max George of The Wanted, 34, has been publicly loved up with Eastenders star Maisie Smith, 21, all summer – and he furiously defended her against recent criticism. Maisie has been performing on a nationwide Strictly Ballroom musical tour, and her beau took issue with the suggestion that her voice lacked “power”.
Max took to Instagram Stories to share the deflating review with his 353,000 followers.
He attached an excerpt from it, which described Maisie and her dance partner Kevin Clifton as “actors”.
“Smith’s sweet, soulful voice has character,” the review continued, “but occasionally lacks power.”
“SAY WHAT?” her defiant boyfriend hit back in disbelief, tagging her in a video clip to assure her that her singing abilities were “insane”.

“Lacks power my a**e!” he captioned the footage of Maisie singing while twirling in a red flamenco style dress.
There has been talk of her embarking on a career in music, following her successful onscreen performances both as Eastenders’ Tiffany Butcher and as the star of The Other Boleyn Girl.
Max has enjoyed a pop career himself with The Wanted, although the group’s frontman, Tom Parker, left him devastated and bereft when he died of a brain tumour earlier this year aged just 33.
Now, Max and Maisie seem inseparable, and have posted a string of snaps of themselves lately looking increasingly loved up.
The pair have uploaded photo and video footage of themselves kissing tenderly, dashing frantically through the rain to avoid getting soaked and playing mischievous pranks on each other.
Now, following yesterday’s widely anticipated gala night, Max has taken to the internet again to confirm his appreciation for her vocals.
“That voice!” he marvelled, before reposting one of Maisie’s Instagram Stories featuring herself laughing and joking with him after the show.
Max and Maisie first met on Strictly back in 2020 but embarked on a relationship this year.
They also attended a Hello! awards ceremony together to cement their status as a couple, just hours before her gala show debut.
Maisie and Max wore matching outfits – a symbol of unity memorably displayed by other stars, including Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears, who were once known as the double denim duo.
Earlier in the year, they took a romantic break to Crete together, and were spotted kissing and cuddling on the aeroplane – just after they had taken another trip to Portugal with their fellow bandmates.
The pair have been on Good Morning Britain this week, and Maisie took the opportunity to declare that her Strictly Ballroom tour is the “best” career move she’s ever made.
