Meghan Markle’s ‘California girl’ style returns – but with added royal ‘polish’

Meghan Markle has carved her own path when it comes to royal fashion by blending the worlds of royal glamour and daring Hollywood. Express.co.uk spoke to Miranda Holder, Royal & Celebrity Fashion Expert and YouTube host, about Meghan’s style journey since joining, and moving on from, the Royal Family.

Since Meghan Markle burst onto the royal scene in 2017, we have seen her wardrobe undergo several transformations.

Ms Holder said: “We have seen Meghan transition from the all-American casual California girl to the polished Duchess dating Prince Harry, and almost back again since she returned to the US – but with a significantly more polished look.”

As an actress, Meghan would dress in bold and fashionable dresses as she took to the red carpets as a TV actress.

Ms Holder opined: “Before she met Harry, Meghan was no stranger to the spotlight; as an actress she ‘worked’ the red carpet, understanding the impact of a killer frock with sky-high heels, always appearing at ease and comfortable in the eye of the camera.

“When she was off-duty, she embodied the laid back vibe of the US West Coast, living in denim and slouchy tees – she looked good, but her style was nothing particularly special on the fashion front.”

Meghan’s wardrobe significantly changed after she was introduced to the world as Prince Harry’s girlfriend and, later in 2018, his wife.

Meghan’s ‘Duchess’ wardrobe became more classic and elegant, and she favoured neutral tones for day-to-day fashion.

The fashion expert said: “Once Meghan met Harry her sartorial game improved significantly, and after a bit of practice, the Duchess mastered a minimalist wardrobe aesthetic of softly tailored separates, immaculately cut neutrals and her signature camel coats which added a luxurious, sophisticated element to her image whilst still retaining an element of laid-back cool.”

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced they would be stepping down as working royals in early 2020, and since then the couple has made their home in Montecito, California.

Back in her home state, Meghan appears to have readopted many of the styles she loved before she was a member of the Royal Family.

Shirts and jeans are firmly back in, and Meghan often opts for high-fashion pieces and daring gowns for formal events.

But Meghan still appears aware of her royal position, and so her outfits now have a slightly more “polished” edge.

A huge fan of colour-blocking, Meghan also donned a show-stopping outfit for the One Young World Summit in Manchester on Monday.

The red top and trousers combo by Another Tomorrow was perfectly finished with a pair of red Aquazzura heels and a sleek hairstyle.

While attending a UN General Assembly event in July, Meghan donned a timeless smart black dress which she paired with matching pumps.

Her outfits at the Invictus Games in April 2022 were also highly fashionable and optimised colour-blocking, with the Duchess’ bright white suit earning a seal of approval from fashion fans.
