Despite a dominating start in the Powerplay (75-1), Chennai Super Kings (CSK) managed just 150-6 in the allotted 20 overs against Rajasthan Royals at the Brabourne Stadium on Friday.
One-drop batsman Moeen Ali (93 off 57 balls, 13×4, 3×6) was in top gear initially, but failed to capitalise on it. At the time of going to press, RR were 52-1 in six overs. CSK skipper MS Dhoni prefers to chase targets. However, he opted to bat with an intention to give his batsmen time and let them score without target-pressure.
Opener Ruturaj Gaikwad (2) got out early, but left-handers Moeen and Devon Conway (16) smashed 75-1 in the first six overs. Moeen, who reached his half-century in just 19 balls, thrashed pacer Trent Boult (1-44) for 26 runs in his third and the innings’ sixth over.
He hit five fours and a six. The duo stitched 83 runs in just 39 balls for the second wicket. Four-time champions CSK’s campaign ended early, but Dhoni announced after winning the toss that he will be in action in the next edition to give his Chennai fans a last chance to watch him on his home ground before quitting IPL cricket.
