Monty Don of Gardeners’ World admitted to more than one million Instagram followers this week that he’d been forced to abandon his rosemary hedge due to the impact of the harsh winter. The 67-year-old TV star shared a snap of the perfectly symmetrical-looking foliage at his famous Longmeadow garden, which barely revealed the recent damage.

However, he explained: “Changes to the Herb garden- rosemary hedge out ( too much winter damage) yew pebbles in.”

Monty’s garden, which is located in rural Herefordshire, close to the market town of Leominster, is legendary among fans of the great outdoors, and eagle-eyed viewers may recognise it from scenes on TV.

It’s come a long way from its humble beginnings as a totally abandoned two-acre field surrounded by builders’ rubble, which was the state it was in when Monty purchased the accompanying house back in 1991.

Although the now much more developed version has since captured the hearts of followers, it’s not open to the public.

However, at auction last year, a bidder donated £6,500 for a single visit to the location.

Big-hearted Monty promised he’d match the offer and donate the same amount himself to a local Herefordshire charity.

For his millions of fans who don’t have access to the garden but love to catch sight of it online, he posts regular updates detailing the developments he’s made to it.

Another recent post showed viewers a loaded-up greenhouse and a promise that the tulips were ready to be placed in the Jewel Garden next month in time for spring.
